TNR Program

Our Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program was created to help and improve the lives of local, unowned community cats through TNR, education, and advocacy of humane cat population control & the importance of spay/neuter. We are dedicated to prevent cat & kitten suffering by humanely reducing the homeless cat population.

Residents and businesses reach out to us for assistance, and our teams help trap the cats, transport them to the clinic where they are spayed/neutered, given a rabies vaccine, & ear-tipped for identification, and then the cats are returned to their original location.

Sometimes, the rough edges are just armor. Six months ago, Bella came to CVRR as an owner surrender. Her home had become unstable, and her family wanted something better for her.Bella did not love me at first sight--quite the opposite. She snarled. She growled. She gave me "the eye." She kept her distance and made it very clear that I had not yet earned a place in her circle.Once I got her to my home, she seemed to like my dogs. They seemed to make her feel safe. And within two hours, something changed with her. Bella climbed into my lap. She looked straight into my eyes and wanted my attention. And for the past six months, that is where she has wanted to be—close by, keeping tabs on her people and making sure she is part of whatever we're doing.Bella has always been selective about who she “takes to.” She adores my teenage sons and has very definite opinions about who is allowed to disappear into their rooms and who must first pass Bella’s inspection. She loves to fetch a ball. She’ll find a random stick in the yard and prance around proudly with it before carrying it inside to add to her ever-growing collection. And when we mow the lawn, Bella makes sure she is right there, keeping pace every step of the way.But the most beautiful thing we’ve watched over these six months has had nothing to do with balls, sticks, or lawn mowers. We’ve watched Bella soften. Little by little, she learned that she was safe. She learned that people could be trusted. The dog who once greeted strangers with growls, suspicion, and the occasional attack of shoe-laces (cough cough Laura) began to relax. She began to let people in.Maybe there’s a lesson in that for all of us.Sometimes what looks like a rough edge is really just protection. Sometimes trust has to be earned. Sometimes we need a little patience, a little consistency, and enough time to discover that it’s safe to show the world who we really are. When Bella met Lynn, there was no snarling. No growling. Just a little Bella-style aloofness while she sized things up. I knew that was good news. And yesterday, Lynn made it official and adopted Bella into her family. I believe with all my heart that this is a wonderful match and that Bella is going to bring her new family many, many years of joy.And this is the part of fostering that is both incredibly hard and incredibly beautiful.I love Bella dearly. I could very happily keep her right here in my home. But fostering isn't about collecting the animals we fall in love with. It's about loving them while they need us, helping them become ready for what comes next, and then making room so we can do it again for another animal who needs a safe place to land.Fostering is one of the most rewarding volunteer opportunities at Central Virginia Regional Rescue. You get a front-row seat to the transformation that happens when an animal realizes, sometimes for the first time, “I am safe here.”And then one day, if you're lucky, you get to watch them leave your home ready to make someone else incredibly happy.Today was Bella's day.Be happy, sweet girl. You earned every bit of this new beginning. ❤️🐾Susan ... See MoreSee Less
